Massive attack by Russia on Ukrainian thermal power plants: significant damage inflicted
On the night of February 3 and morning, Russian military forces once again attacked DTEK’s thermal power plants, causing significant damage to the equipment. As a result of the shelling, energy facilities in Kyiv, Kharkiv, as well as in Sumy and Dnipropetrovsk regions were affected.
According to DTEK’s press service, this is already the ninth major attack on their facilities since October 2025. Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Ukrainian thermal power plants have been attacked over 220 times, resulting in injuries to 59 energy workers, of which four were fatal. The latest attack occurred in the context of statements by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who reportedly asked the Russian side to stop shelling energy facilities due to weather conditions, and the statement by Dmitry Peskov, spokesperson for the Russian President, about a possible “energy truce” that was supposed to last until February 1.
Analysts note that constant attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure are part of a strategy to further destabilize the country during the winter period. This affects the electricity supply to millions of people and may complicate the economic situation. Experts warn that future attacks could be even more destructive to critical infrastructure.
