Russian forces deliberately targeted energy facilities on which nuclear power plants depend – Zelenskyy

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky reported a decrease in generation and the automatic shutdown of one of the nuclear power plant units due to the occupiers’ strikes on critical energy infrastructure.

On February 7, during a massive attack, Russian forces targeted energy facilities in Ukraine, which are crucial for the operation of nuclear power plants. President Zelensky emphasized that such actions threaten the security of Ukraine and the region as a whole. According to him, international partners should respond appropriately to this situation and exert corresponding pressure on Moscow.

As reported by the Ministry of Energy, due to drone and missile attacks on substations and power lines, the reduction in nuclear power plant capacity was a forced measure. This resulted in significant power outages throughout Ukraine.

The President also announced plans to strengthen the mobile fire groups of the Defense Forces to enhance the protection of regions. Zelensky expressed hope for the activation of diplomacy in cooperation with partners to support air defense and the country’s energy resilience.

During the attack on February 7, Russia used 408 drones and 39 missiles, of which Ukrainian forces destroyed 382 drones and 24 missiles. Minister of Energy and First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Shmyhal reported that the Burshtyn and Dobrotvirska thermal power plants were hit.

Earlier, on January 17, the Main Intelligence Directorate had warned that Russia was exploring potential attacks on substations to pressure Ukraine into signing capitulation terms. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine informs partners about the possible catastrophic consequences of such actions.
