After the massive attack by Russia, more than 800,000 subscribers in Kyiv were left without power – Shmyhal

Minister of Energy of Ukraine on measures after the shelling: the energy system is in a critical state

As a result of a massive attack by the Russian Federation on the capital of Ukraine on the night of January 24, hundreds of thousands of Kyiv residents were left without electricity. Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal noted that due to constant shelling, the restoration of the energy system is proceeding slowly, creating significant difficulties for the population.

Shmyhal reported that more than 800,000 subscribers in Kyiv were left without power due to emergency shutdowns caused by attacks on civilian infrastructure, including energy and heating, in the Kyiv, Kharkiv, Chernihiv, and other regions. At the meeting of the Emergency Situation Headquarters, actions were coordinated to restore the heating supply and resolve other urgent tasks. Special attention is given to vulnerable categories of the population, for whom special support measures are enhanced.

According to Shmyhal, the Ministry of Energy has already distributed more than 143 tons of humanitarian aid, including generators, transformers, cables, and pumps, which are key for ensuring the operation of energy enterprises. Aid is sent to the energy sectors of Kyiv and the region, as well as Kharkiv and Sumy regions. Additional equipment from international partners, including generators from Slovakia, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and several other countries, is expected soon.

Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko reported that in the evening 3,300 high-rise buildings in the capital were without heat, whereas in the morning this figure was 6,000. He emphasized that the especially difficult situation was in Troyeshchyna, where about 600 houses were without utilities. During the shelling, 21 missiles and 375 drones were launched, but the Ukrainian air defense managed to shoot down 357 drones and 15 missiles. Unfortunately, the attack led to the death of one person in Kyiv and more than 30 injured in Kharkiv.
