Ukrainian companies have purchased the first electronic warfare equipment to protect critical infrastructure, which will be operated by the military.

The Ministry of Defense launched a project to protect critical infrastructure from air attacks

The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine implemented an experimental project allowing critical infrastructure enterprises to independently purchase electronic warfare (EW) means to protect their facilities. This was reported by Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal.

Based on the new initiative, enterprises in the energy and defense-industrial sectors can now directly contact the Main Directorate of Electronic Warfare and Cyber Warfare of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to request enhanced protection. Although enterprises are granted the right to make purchases, powerful EW systems are classified as weapons, so they cannot use them independently.

The protection process involves contacting the military with an initiative to analyze potential threats. Based on this analysis, the military offers equipment options suitable for a particular facility. Some operators have already purchased and installed the equipment. Following this, the owner signs a contract with the chosen military unit, which provides free-of-charge operation of the equipment. These systems are integrated into the national air defense system to protect specific facilities.

The project improves the level of protection for critical infrastructure objects in the context of air attack threats. However, it is important that EW means remain fixed at their location and cannot be relocated.

Process Stages Actions
1. Request Submission An enterprise contacts the Main Directorate of Electronic Warfare and Cyber Warfare of the APU
2. Threat Analysis The military analyzes risks and suggests equipment
3. Equipment Procurement The enterprise purchases or imports the equipment
4. Agreement Conclusion Signing a contract with a military unit for free-of-charge operation
5. Integration into Air Defense Connecting the means to the air defense system
