Prices for lard in Ukraine surged by 26% due to shortage and rising costs
Over the year, the cost of lard in Ukraine increased by 26.2% due to a shortage of pig livestock and increased maintenance costs, reports Agronews. In October, the average cost per kilogram was 206.81 UAH, which is 6.6% higher than in September.
The increase in price is attributed by experts to a shortage of pig livestock, partly due to ongoing outbreaks of African swine fever in various regions of Ukraine. Economic upheavals, particularly high energy costs, have affected the cost of compound feeds and the maintenance of livestock products. Additionally, the war has significantly complicated access to resources and increased operational costs for animal maintenance.
Consumer prices in Ukraine in October rose by 0.9%, while the annual inflation growth slowed to 10.9%. Despite this, the prices for lard continue to rise, making this product less accessible for the average consumer. In stores, lard costs from 150 to 200 UAH/kg for cheaper varieties, while customers will have to pay up to 600-700 UAH/kg for premium segments.
