ChatGPT head Nick Turley from OpenAI dismissed rumors that the chatbot could use ads, following the appearance of a screenshot allegedly demonstrating this capability.
The appearance of a screenshot showing the possibility of making purchases at Target directly through ChatGPT sparked a discussion among users. In response, Nick Turley in his post on X assured that “there are no live ad tests.” He added that any screenshots suggesting this are either not genuine or not advertisements.
Another OpenAI employee, Daniel Macaulay, clarified that the mentioned screenshot is an example of app integration, not advertising. OpenAI had previously announced such integration in October. The company’s chief researcher, Mark Chen, acknowledged a lack of transparency in this case. He confirmed that the company is working on improving its model, allowing users to reduce or turn off recommendations if they appear unhelpful.
Despite the official denial, uncertainty about OpenAI’s future advertising strategy remains. Turley emphasized that should advertising be introduced, OpenAI will choose a thoughtful approach.
Such discussions around chatbot monetization underscore the importance of transparency and user control over the content they receive. Experts believe that such instances may affect the overall perception of technology and prompt companies to focus more on user needs and protection.
