90% of Ukrainians are against holding elections during the war – Zelenskyy

Ukraine may hold elections subject to a truce between Trump and Putin

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky stated that elections in the country could be held during a temporary truce if Donald Trump manages to reach an agreement with Vladimir Putin. This could provide an opportunity to organize the voting process under ceasefire conditions.

In a televised interview for Politico, Zelensky noted that 90% of Ukrainians oppose holding elections during the war, as they consider it extremely dangerous. To organize elections, the country needs security guarantees from its allies. Moreover, the parliament will have to make corresponding amendments to the legislation, which currently prohibits elections during wartime.

Cooperation with international partners, particularly with Washington, is critically important. Zelensky expressed hope that the United States could help create safe conditions for the elections. However, the question remains open on how the military at the front and Ukrainian refugees abroad will vote.

Donald Trump emphasized that elections in Ukraine are needed as they “have not been held for a very long time” and also expressed a willingness to initiate peace plan negotiations. Despite this, the head of the European Parliament criticized the idea of elections during the conflict, describing it as a “cynical scenario”.
