Ukraine warns of increased threat from Transnistria
Ukrainian intelligence warns about a possible invasion of sabotage groups from Transnistria, where Russia has intensified its activities. The threat to Ukraine’s security from this region is increasing.
According to a source in the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, Russia is escalating its activity in the self-proclaimed Transnistria, which is part of Moldova’s territory but has been controlled by Russia since the Transnistrian conflict in the early 1990s. In particular, weapon supplies are being restored, production capacities for drones are being created, and training centers for their operators are being opened.
Russia’s aim is to divert Ukraine’s resources by increasing the military threat from this region. Mobilization measures have also been intensified, with reservists being called up to the army.
After Gazprom stopped supplying gas to Transnistria at the beginning of 2025, the Moldovan authorities saved the region from an energy collapse by supplying gas through “Moldovagaz.” In addition, the Kremlin is also preparing for the so-called “presidential elections” in Transnistria in 2026, which, according to the source, could be part of a broader Russian hybrid operation.
The President of Moldova confirmed the possibility of deploying additional Russian troops in Transnistria in June 2025. She had previously noted that negotiations with Ukraine could facilitate the withdrawal of Russian troops from the region.
