Zelensky calls to fight for US participation in Ukraine peace talks
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized the importance of involving the United States in peace negotiations with Russia during a conversation with journalists. He mentioned that his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron had discussed with him possible partner actions if the US fails to restrain Russia.
Zelensky stressed the need for efforts to keep America as an important participant in the negotiations. “We must fight for a format where all allies, including the US, are part of the process, and European partners provide support. This is a strong alliance, and it’s worth fighting for,” noted the President. At the same time, he acknowledged that in case of failure to involve the US, other formats may be considered.
Zelensky’s statement came after Macron’s words on December 19, who expressed readiness to continue dialogue with Russia provided there is transparency and cooperation with Ukraine. The last time Macron spoke with the Russian president was in July 2025, focusing on the war in Ukraine. After this, contact with Zelensky was established to discuss the details of the conversation.
During previous negotiations between Macron and Russian President Vladimir Putin, which lasted over two hours, the Russian leader rejected the proposal to cease fire, as reported by sources from Bloomberg.
