India Reviews Russian Oil Imports Amid U.S. Pressure
An Indian delegation is discussing in Washington the possibilities for reducing Russian oil imports amid increasing pressure from the United States, which aims to deepen energy cooperation with India.
This week, Indian officials are in the U.S. capital to participate in trade talks, during which the issue of oil imports from Russia is being discussed. Washington, seeking to reduce India’s dependence on Russian energy resources, has doubled tariffs on Indian goods. U.S. President Donald Trump stated that India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed willingness to cease purchases of Russian oil. However, India’s Ministry of External Affairs emphasized that stable energy prices and reliable supplies remain the country’s main priorities.
Experts note that a rapid halt of imports from Russia is unlikely, as it could lead to a global increase in oil prices and exacerbate inflation. Meanwhile, India has already reduced its import of Russian oil: from April to September 2025, the share of Russian oil in the total imports decreased from 40% to 36%. At the same time, supplies from the U.S. and Middle Eastern countries have increased. The U.S. continues to seek to capitalize on the situation by offering its own oil, which could impact the market in the near future.
