Car Explosion in Moscow Claims Life of Russian Ministry of Defense Senior Official
Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, head of the operational training department of the Russian Armed Forces General Staff, died in Moscow after an explosive device beneath his car detonated on December 22.
The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation confirmed that the explosion occurred on Yaseneva Street. According to their reports, the explosive device was planted under the car’s bottom. In this incident, Sarvarov sustained injuries incompatible with life.
Russian authorities have initiated a criminal case on charges of murder committed in a generally dangerous way and illegal trafficking of explosive substances. One version is that this attack might have been organized by Ukrainian intelligence services, but there is currently no confirmation of this version.
Fanil Sarvarov was known for his involvement in military operations in Chechnya, Ossetia, Syria, as well as in the large-scale war of Russia against Ukraine. In 2024, he received the rank of Major General and was awarded several orders, including “For Merit to the Fatherland” and the Order of Courage.
This incident has become another in a series of attacks on senior officials. In recent months, other military leaders have been killed, such as a general in Balashikha in April 2025 and an OMON lieutenant colonel in the Kemerovo region in October.
