The summit in Budapest was canceled due to Russia’s demands on Ukraine
The planned meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin, which was to take place in Budapest, was canceled due to Moscow’s tough demands on Ukraine. This is reported by the Financial Times, citing informed sources.
According to the publication, the main reason for the meeting’s cancellation was Russia’s repeated sending of a memorandum to Washington, in which the Kremlin emphasized the need to resolve the so-called “root causes” of the war. Among the demands made by Russia were territorial concessions by Ukraine, a reduction in its armed forces, and guarantees of not joining NATO.
After receiving these conditions from Russia, a “tense exchange of views” took place between Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Sources note that Rubio informed Trump of Russia’s lack of readiness for compromise. A few days later, Donald Trump announced that he would not meet with Putin until there were real chances of signing a peace agreement.
The context of this event is connected to the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, which remains a point of tension in relations between the West and Moscow. An analysis of sentiments in diplomatic circles indicates that Russia’s demands may complicate further efforts to peacefully resolve the conflict. Experts warn that further escalation of the situation could lead to even greater tensions in the geopolitical climate.
