Estonia will not open a border crossing point with Russia; instead, it will construct fences there.

Estonia Keeps the “Saatse Boot” Closed Due to Security Threat

Estonia has decided to keep the “Saatse Boot” border area closed after armed Russian soldiers were spotted there. This decision was made to ensure the country’s security.

Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal stated that the border section Saatse-Saapa, known as the “Saatse Boot,” will remain closed for reasons of national security. According to him, the presence of armed personnel in this area has made previous agreements on uninterrupted passage through Russian territory impossible. Michal emphasized that these routes will be replaced by a bypass road, construction of which will be completed in the coming months.

Estonia’s Minister of the Interior, Igor Taro, confirmed the government’s decision, noting that no Estonian official body can guarantee safe passage through the “Saatse Boot.” He also mentioned plans to install barriers and connect fences on both sides of the road to enhance safety.

Incidents involving armed military personnel appearing near the Estonian border were reported on October 10th and 11th. On the same day, Estonia closed crossings on the border with Russia. The government’s decision underscores the importance of ensuring border integrity and preventing possible threats.
