Estonia’s Foreign Minister explained why it makes no sense to resume dialogue with Putin.

Estonia: The futility of dialogue with Russia is critically emphasized by the minister

Estonia’s Foreign Minister, Margus Tsahkna, expressed the opinion that dialogue with Russian leader Vladimir Putin yields no results, highlighting it as a tool for new aggression.

In an interview with LIGA.net, Margus Tsahkna noted that negotiations with Putin, ongoing for over 20 years, have proven fruitless. Referring to the events in Georgia in 2008 and the war in Ukraine since 2014, he stressed that dialogue and economic ties have not led to peace. “Putin uses any dialogue only as a tool for new aggression,” the minister said.

Tsahkna believes that peace can only be achieved by force, emphasizing that the West underestimated the threat in 2008, 2014, and even 2022. According to him, if support for Ukraine had been provided earlier—already in the first year of the full-scale invasion—the Ukrainian side could have achieved victory. Meanwhile, Estonia consistently supports Ukraine’s accession to NATO and the European Union, stressing the need to increase partner support for Ukraine and pressure on Russia.

In February, it was reported about a phone conversation between Donald Trump and Putin, which was a rare communication at the international level. This caused criticism from Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, who noted that such actions could facilitate Russia’s emergence from international isolation.
