MEPs expressed skepticism about the US peace plan while discussing the initiative during a session in Strasbourg. Despite the importance of the document, European politicians do not consider its implementation likely due to Russia’s position.
Finnish MEP Pekka Tovari emphasized that during the plenary session, the deputies did not discuss specific points of the peace plan but focused on issues of exchange of prisoners of war and the return of civilians and children. Tovari noted that the European Union seeks to play a more active role in international relations, which includes not only responding to the actions of Moscow and Washington but also cooperating with Kyiv. However, the politician expressed doubts about the potential effectiveness of this plan, as “the Russians will not accept it anyway.”
Lithuanian MEP Petras Austrevicius also commented on the situation, emphasizing that while the European Parliament does not comment on the specific plan, it outlined its principles and vision. According to him, the EU should react to the creation of such documents to avoid a situation where a “devil’s plan” becomes the only alternative.
Experts warn that the point of the plan about the reunification of families may be used by Russia against Ukraine. This was confirmed by the head of the Media Initiative for Human Rights and a legal adviser to Amnesty International Ukraine.
