Zaluzhny: Ukraine and Russia Need Economic Security Mechanisms
Former Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valeriy Zaluzhny believes that economic capitals could serve as security guarantees for Ukraine and Russia. In his column for LIGA.net, he emphasized the importance of technological developments in the future for securing the safety of both countries.
According to Zaluzhny, one reason the Russo-Ukrainian war persists is the absence of a security guarantee mechanism. He noted that in a world where the concept of international law no longer exists in its classical form, concluding peace agreements without long-term security guarantees is impossible. Among the possible ways to ensure security, Zaluzhny views Ukraine’s accession to NATO or the deployment of nuclear weapons on its territory, although currently this is not realistic.
Moreover, Zaluzhny noted that with the advancement of technology, the cost of war could decrease while simultaneously increasing the potential for offensive actions. This, he said, could lead to a situation where Russia too will need its own security guarantees.
In Zaluzhny’s opinion, the foundation of such guarantees could be economic mechanisms capable of mutually supporting and protecting the capitals of both countries, preventing economic collapse in the post-war period. He emphasizes that such economic losses could have political consequences, as seen in history.
The former commander also suggested that the war might end without a clear winner, further highlighting the necessity of establishing economic guarantees.
