On October 20, 2023, users worldwide experienced a disruption in Amazon Web Services (AWS), affecting numerous services and companies. This incident emphasizes the importance of diversifying cloud computing to reduce risks.
Amazon Web Services suffered a major outage that began at 10:10 Kyiv time. This led to issues for over 2000 companies and services, including Amazon’s main site, Alexa, Snapchat, Roblox, and many others. More than 8 million complaints were recorded from users in various countries, including the USA, the UK, and Australia.
The cause of the outage was internal network problems at AWS, affecting endpoints in the US-EAST-1 region. The company noted that the incident was not the result of a cyberattack but occurred accidentally. To restore operations, AWS limited the number of requests on its platform.
Experts stress the necessity of diversifying cloud computing to reduce dependence on a limited number of tech giants. Such dependence creates risks for the global economy, as any major outage can have significant financial consequences, estimated in billions of dollars.
Hybrid and multi-cloud architectures could be the way to minimize risks. This approach allows organizations to combine hyperscaler resources with local infrastructure, ensuring business continuity even during regional disruptions.
