Bulgaria is preparing a legislative proposal for control over the “Lukoil” plant in Burgas
The Bulgarian government is aiming to take control of the oil refinery in Burgas, owned by the Russian company “Lukoil”, to protect against US sanctions. The bill provides for the appointment of a special manager who will execute the sale without the participation of the Russian side.
According to a Reuters report, the bill enables the acquisition of control over Bulgaria’s only oil refinery, preventing the risk of secondary sanctions that could affect the country’s energy supply. GERB party leader Boyko Borisov confirmed that the document will be submitted to parliament soon.
This government move is aimed at ensuring Bulgaria’s energy security and avoiding a potential supply crisis. Experts note that the measure is part of a broader government strategy to minimize economic reliance on Russian oil products by strengthening ties with other countries. At the same time, “Lukoil” announced the sale of its foreign assets to the Swiss company Gunvor, but it is still unclear if this deal includes the plant in Burgas.
It should be noted that the Russian oil company “Lukoil” has come under US sanctions following restrictions imposed against Rosneft and other oil giants, prohibiting transactions with sanctioned companies and their structures.
| Country | Plant | Company | Plan of Action |
