For the first time, a Muslim will become the mayor of New York, Democrats won the elections in Virginia and New Jersey
Democratic Party candidate Zogran Mamdani won the New York mayoral election, becoming the first Muslim to hold this position. Virginia and New Jersey also saw confident Democratic victories.
Mamdani, a 34-year-old Democrat, defeated former New York governor Andrew Cuomo, taking the mayoral position of one of the world’s most influential cities. He became the youngest mayor of New York in a century and the first Muslim in this position. During his election campaign, Mamdani openly opposed Donald Trump’s policies, calling for a “generation of change” to fight oligarchy and authoritarianism.
Mamdani, who describes himself as a “democratic socialist,” promises significant changes for New Yorkers, including improving housing accessibility and quality, and creating a free bus transportation program.
In addition, Democrat Abigail Spanberger won the elections in Virginia, becoming the state’s first female governor. In New Jersey, another Democratic Party representative, Mikie Sherrill, defeated Republican candidate Jack Ciattarelli.
These elections were significant as they were the first challenging elections after Trump’s presidency, demonstrating growing support for democratic ideas. Meanwhile, former Vice President Kamala Harris expressed plans of possible participation in the 2028 presidential elections.
