Ukraine and Russia have announced a local ceasefire to restore the power supply to the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.

A Truce Established at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant for Power Supply Restoration

At the temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP), efforts have commenced to restore damaged power lines following a four-week blackout. This has been made possible by establishing local truce zones.

The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, stated that the establishment of the truce has created necessary conditions for repair works. Restoring external power supply is critically important for the nuclear safety and security of the plant. Both sides of the conflict have constructively cooperated with the IAEA in implementing a complex repair plan.

Earlier, on October 16, the head of the Russian state corporation “Rosatom,” Alexei Likhachev, mentioned the possibility of a ceasefire to restore ZNPP’s power supply, noting that the work could last six to seven days. One of the damaged power lines is located in the occupied territory, while the other is on territory controlled by Ukraine.

The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant has previously experienced blackouts, switching to diesel generators not designed for prolonged operation without regular power.

This situation in the region raises international concern due to the increased risk to the population and the environment. Restoring ZNPP’s power supply could reduce the risks of accidents, and establishing a truce is a step toward a peaceful resolution of the conflict. Experts believe that the resolution of this issue has been made possible by the diplomatic efforts of the IAEA and the international community.
