Ukraine to Receive First Non-Lethal Military Aid from Slovakia Under Fico’s Government

Slovakia has agreed to provide Ukraine with its first package of non-lethal military assistance after a long pause in defense cooperation. The decision marks a symbolic shift in relations between Kyiv and Bratislava, following the election of pro-Russian Prime Minister Robert Fico in 2023, who had previously halted all military support to Ukraine.

What Ukraine Will Receive

Under the agreement signed by Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal and Slovak Defense Minister Robert Kaliňák, Kyiv will receive engineering and construction equipment, transport vehicles, demining systems, and medical evacuation units.

“Slovakia will provide Ukraine free of charge with engineering and construction machinery, including five Bozena demining vehicles, transport equipment, demining complexes, and medical evacuation systems,” Shmyhal wrote on social media.

The Bozena vehicles are among the world’s most advanced in their class, capable of clearing up to 3,000 square meters per hour and widely used in UN-led humanitarian missions. Such equipment is especially critical for Ukraine, where over 30% of the country’s territory remains potentially contaminated with mines and unexploded ordnance.

This marks the first Slovak support package for Ukraine since Fico’s government came to power and blocked the 14th military aid package worth over €40 million in 2023. That assistance was supposed to include ammunition, mortars, and missiles for “Kub” air defense systems.

Fico’s government, known for its Eurosceptic stance and closer alignment with Hungary and Russia, has sharply contrasted with the policies of previous Slovak administrations that actively backed Kyiv.

Nevertheless, analysts say the latest move signals a pragmatic recalibration in Bratislava’s foreign policy. As a member of NATO and the EU, Slovakia risks diplomatic isolation if it distances itself too far from the bloc’s collective support for Ukraine.

According to Shmyhal, Slovakia is already preparing a 15th support package, which may also include technical and humanitarian assistance. The announcement indicates that bilateral cooperation is not only being restored but could become more structured and ongoing.

Ukraine’s Defense Ministry said the demining equipment will primarily be deployed in southern and eastern regions, where large-scale mine clearance continues following heavy combat.

This agreement could become a turning point in Slovak-Ukrainian defense cooperation, signaling that even skeptical EU governments recognize the need to assist Ukraine in its ongoing struggle against Russian aggression.
