OpenAI will release a portable smart speaker in 2027, the price may reach $400
OpenAI plans to release a portable smart speaker in 2027 with an estimated price of $300 to $400. This exceeds the cost of most similar devices on the market, including premium segment models.
The new speaker is expected to become a home AI computer capable of performing a variety of tasks based on ChatGPT. Among the device’s capabilities are smart home management, music playback, answering questions, and messaging. The smart speaker will be screenless but equipped with a camera and sensors to analyze the environment. Thanks to the battery, it can be moved from room to room.
OpenAI is also working on its own audio interface for the novelty. During November and December 2025, the company united several engineering and research teams to update its audio models. An important feature of the device will be human-like interaction through the innovative GPT-Live voice system, capable of supporting natural conversation.
The development is led by the io Products team, which OpenAI acquired for $6.5 billion. The startup was founded by former Apple chief designer Jony Ive. Other former Apple employees, such as Tan Tan and Evans Hankey, are also involved in the project.
Interestingly, in early July 2026, Apple filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, accusing it of using trade secrets. OpenAI emphasizes the lack of evidence and underscores fair competition. The court process could impact the release timeline of the device.
