Qatar has slowed down the production of liquefied natural gas.

Qatar changes strategy due to the attack on a tanker in the Strait of Hormuz

After the strike on a Qatari tanker in the Strait of Hormuz, Qatar decided to suspend plans to increase liquefied natural gas (LNG) production at the Ras Laffan complex.

The tanker attack incident was a turning point for Qatar’s leadership, which urgently held security meetings. According to Bloomberg, QatarEnergy’s head Saad al-Kaabi decided to temporarily stop further expansion of production, keeping the Ras Laffan complex operating at a minimal level. To improve security, the approach of ships to the facility was limited.

It should be noted that on July 7, a Qatari vessel was attacked near the coast of Oman while exiting the strait with significant damages. Qatar blamed Iran for the incident, which violated agreements on the temporary halt of attacks in the region.

It was previously reported that Qatar planned to gradually resume LNG production, which had been reduced due to the Middle East conflict, aiming to return half of its capacity within a month. However, the current situation forces the country to reconsider its plans and focus on ensuring maritime security at its borders.

Experts believe that the escalation in the Strait of Hormuz could significantly impact the global energy market, as the strait is a critical route for transporting oil and gas from the Middle East. The world’s market dependence on the stability of this channel underscores the necessity of resolving regional conflicts.
