The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine failed the opposition’s attempts to block the draft law on increasing funding for the security and defense sector by UAH 1.56 trillion in the state budget for 2026. Subsequently, Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk signed the law, which is now awaiting the signature of President Volodymyr Zelensky.
During an extraordinary session of parliament, none of the seven resolutions submitted by the opposition to cancel the vote received the necessary 226 votes, gathering between 18 and 24 votes. The initiators of these resolutions were deputies from the “European Solidarity” faction and the “For the Future” party, claiming that the funds could be spent by the government without targeted direction and proper provision for the military.
The controversial draft law was approved on June 10, receiving the support of 242 deputies. Despite the increase in defense funding, the bill does not provide for an increase in military allowances. Meanwhile, President Zelensky previously promised that from June, the military would receive increased payments: from 30,000 hryvnias for rear positions to 300,000 hryvnias for infantrymen on the front line.
