Discord is testing the implementation of spatial audio in voice chats
Discord has begun testing the feature of spatial audio in voice chats. This capability will update the format of communication, maintaining the effect of live conversation.
The spatial audio feature was initially discovered in Discord Canary — an experimental application where the company tests new developments. It will allow users to change the position of interlocutors in virtual space, which affects the playback of sound: with different volume and shifts between channels depending on direction and distance. This will create the effect of conversation as if participants are nearby, similar to sound in the real world.
So far, Discord has not announced the official launch of the new feature for all users, and it is unknown when it will become available. In February 2026, the platform implemented mandatory age verification, requiring facial scan or ID for full access from March.
Spatial audio is not new in the world of virtual communications. Microsoft Teams already uses a similar technology during meetings and virtual events. This feature is also implemented in the SpatialChat platform, which creates a feeling of distance between interlocutors in virtual offices.
| Platform | Spatial Audio Feature |
|---|---|
| Discord | Testing in Discord Canary |
| Microsoft Teams | Used during meetings and virtual events |
| SpatialChat | Virtual offices and events with a sense of distance |
This technology represents a new stage in the development of communication platforms, enriching user experience and increasing the realism of virtual meetings.
