Apple is developing new AirPods with built-in cameras that will be part of an AI system focused on “eye” interaction. According to Bloomberg, the devices are already in the final stage of design testing.
The new AirPods are not intended for taking photos or videos. Their main function is to provide the Siri voice assistant with visual data to analyze the environment. Users will be able to receive prompts about objects around them, navigation, or recipes, which will expand the functionality of voice queries. To avoid privacy violations, the devices will be equipped with an LED indicator to signal data transmission.
Initially, the release of the new AirPods was planned for the first half of 2026, but it was postponed to September due to delays with the updated version of Siri. Apple integrated Google Gemini technologies into the model to improve AI functions, but the final launch dates may change. The company still has questions regarding the quality of the “visual intelligence.”
This project is part of Apple’s large-scale strategy for the development of AI devices, which also includes the development of smart glasses, home devices, as well as a foldable iPhone and MacBook with a touchscreen.
