King Charles III of the United Kingdom, during his speech to the US Congress, called for unwavering support for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia. This visit is seen as an opportunity to enhance relations between London and Washington.
Charles III emphasized the importance of supporting Ukraine to achieve a just and lasting peace, highlighting the significance of cooperation within NATO. The monarch mentioned the times of uncertainty in the world, from Europe to the Middle East, which require the reform of the UK’s defense policy. He stressed that London plans to increase defense spending to the highest level since the Cold War.
During the speech, Charles also mentioned the September 11 attacks and vowed to honor the memory of the victims during his visit to New York. The monarch noted that the US and the UK have historically stood side by side on defense issues, from the two world wars to conflicts in Afghanistan.
This is the second time a British monarch has addressed the US Congress; the first was his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, in 1991. Charles III’s visit comes amid tensions in relations between London and Washington, but it aims to strengthen diplomatic ties.
The royal couple also visited the White House, where they were received by former President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania. The Guardian reported that Charles’s meeting with Trump was held without cameras to avoid potential public misunderstandings.
