Abnormal conditions – natural reactions: why fatigue in the fourth year of war is common

Ukrainians face chronic stress during the war: how to maintain psychological health

During the full-scale invasion, Ukrainians have experienced numerous psychological states caused by prolonged stress. In wartime conditions, it is important to find ways to maintain mental health.

It is not only about fear, anger, or apathy. For many Ukrainians, this has become a daily reality, and research shows that over 40% of citizens suffer from elevated levels of anxiety or depression, even if they live in relatively safe areas. As the nervous system is not adapted to a constant “combat readiness” mode, periods of activity and productivity alternate with waves of exhaustion and apathy.

Experts emphasize that gaps in self-care can lead to burnout — a gradual loss of motivation and purpose in life. In war conditions, Ukrainians feel the need to maintain not only physical but also psychological health to stay operational and support those around them.

As part of a mental health support program in Ukraine, 11 assistance centers called “RETURN” have already been opened, where everyone can receive free professional consultation. This indicates a recognition of the importance of mental health and underscores that seeking help is not a sign of weakness but a means of preserving internal resources.

Promoting mental hygiene, which is as basic as physical hygiene, involves ensuring regular sleep, limiting informational noise, and receiving professional help when necessary.
