Trump “not for decades”: California Governor in Munich stated the temporary nature of the U.S. President

The Governor of California criticizes Trump’s policy at the Munich conference

The Governor of the American state of California, Gavin Newsom, speaking at the Munich Security Conference, stated that US President Donald Trump is “temporary” and predicted significant losses for him in the midterm elections to Congress.

At the conference, which took place on February 14, Newsom expressed confidence that Trump’s policy “will be measured in years, not decades,” predicting that his administration will face legal obstacles that may limit the ability to introduce new tariffs. According to Newsom, Trump’s leadership style does not reflect enduring American values. He called for stable partnerships with American states like California during this “unstable” period for the US.

Newsom noted that Europe has become more united in response to the uncertainty caused by Trump’s presidency, suggesting that this might be Trump’s only contribution. The Governor also hinted at his possible ambitions regarding the presidential elections in 2028.

In his speech, Newsom contrasted “the rule of law” with “the rule of Don,” warning against “imperial presidential power.” He also responded to Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s speech, which, although emphasizing the ties between Europe and the US, critically spoke about what he saw as the continent’s departure from shared Western values.

Commenting on this, Newsom noted that if Rubio meant popular sovereignty and the rule of law, then he agrees with him. However, the governor does not support the idea of imperialism and imperial presidential power. Newsom also criticized Trump’s approach to ending the war, which, in his opinion, does not bring real results.
