Tesla invests $2 billion in xAI and prepares to launch Cybercab robotaxi in 2026

Tesla announced its intention to invest $2 billion in xAI to support its ambitions in the field of autonomous driving. At the same time, the company plans to launch the Cybercab robotaxi in 2026.

This strategic investment is part of Tesla’s efforts to position itself not only as an electric vehicle manufacturer but also as a technological AI company. Tesla CFO Vaibhav Taneja added that this will also be facilitated by the development of the humanoid robot Optimus, Semi trucks, and the Roadster sports car. The company’s capital expenditures in 2026 are expected to exceed $20 billion, more than double the increase from $8.5 billion in 2025.

Experts note that Tesla is undergoing a significant transitional period. Analysts advise investors to pay attention to the potential revenue from autonomous software and robotaxis, rather than just vehicle sales volumes. Investing analyst Thomas Monteiro emphasizes that the pace of deployment of autonomous technologies is becoming more important than the number of cars sold.

While the company’s priorities are shifting, its financial results show some challenges. In 2025, Tesla’s revenue decreased by 3% to over $94 billion. Net profit in the fourth quarter decreased by 61%, reaching $840 million.

Year Capital Expenditure ($ billion) Revenue ($ billion) Net Profit ($ million)
2025 8.5 94 840
2026 (plan) 20
