Portugal will allocate 50 million euros for defense programs for Ukraine.
Portugal plans to allocate significant funds over five years to support Ukraine’s defense programs, particularly through the PURL and SAFE initiatives.
Ukraine’s Minister of Defense Denys Shmyhal announced that Portugal is ready to invest 50 million euros in the PURL mechanism, through which NATO countries purchase American weapons for Ukraine. Following negotiations with Portuguese Minister of Defense Nuno Melo, Shmyhal noted that Lisbon plans to allocate 25 million euros over five years under the European SAFE initiative to purchase defense products in Ukraine.
During the meeting, prospects for cooperation in the defense sector were discussed, particularly the implementation of joint projects of strategic importance for the long-term strengthening of Ukraine’s defense capabilities. Special attention was given to the critical defense needs of Ukraine that ensure the protection of civilians and infrastructure.
Shortly before this, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro signed an agreement in Kyiv on cooperation in the production of maritime drones. Also, during the latest “Ramstein” meeting, Lisbon committed to support the “Czech initiative” to supply ammunition to Ukraine by providing 10 million euros for drones.
