The European Union has tightened sanctions against Russia and Belarus.

The EU has imposed sanctions against Russia and Belarus over new threats

The Council of the European Union has announced a new criterion for imposing sanctions, introducing restrictive measures against 12 individuals and two organizations in response to the hybrid actions of Russia and Belarus. Thus, 59 individuals and 17 organizations have already been sanctioned.

The EU accused Russia of spreading disinformation and carrying out cyberattacks, including manipulating foreign information, with the aim of destabilizing and collecting confidential data from EU, Ukrainian, and NATO allies’ government bodies. Some attacks were linked to the activities of the 142nd Separate Electronic Warfare Battalion based in Kaliningrad, which was involved in GPS signal disruptions within the EU. Russian military intelligence and the cyber threat group Cadet Blizzard also came under sanctions.

Regarding Belarus, new sanctions were imposed due to systematic unfriendly actions, including the smuggling of weather balloons, which led to disruptions in Lithuania’s critical infrastructure, notably affecting Vilnius Airport, impacting hundreds of flights and thousands of passengers. The EU is expanding the scope of sanctions against Belarus to cover actions that undermine democracy and stability in member states.

The importance of these sanctions lies in demonstrating the EU’s readiness to counter hybrid threats from Russia and Belarus, protecting its geopolitical interests and regional stability. The introduction of new sanction criteria expands the EU’s ability to target entities contributing to unfriendly actions.
