8 Trends in eHealth: What Drives the Digital Development of Medicine – Column

Digital Transformation of Medicine in Ukraine: New Trends and Prospects

Ukrainian medicine has been actively moving towards digitalization since the beginning of the medical reform, accompanied by the development of an electronic healthcare ecosystem. The implementation of technologies opens up new opportunities for healthcare workers and patients, providing them with convenient tools and services.

One of the main trends in eHealth development is the systematization and centralization of data. This helps reduce the time spent searching for necessary medical information, as an organized database allows for quick access to relevant information within existing registers. For instance, the electronic healthcare system contains information on 35 million patients, automates the distribution of medical staff into internships, and allows for online registration for procedures.

Public-private partnership has become an important element in the digitalization of medicine. The interaction between public and private components ensures the effective functioning of medical information systems. For example, 37 medical systems are connected to a centralized database where 400,000 healthcare professionals work, enabling patient service across the country.

Process automation in medical facilities has also become a priority. Medical institutions are moving away from paper documentation, implementing ERP systems, and electronic document management. Among the examples of successful automation is the National Children’s Specialized Hospital “Okhmatdyt,” which has become a leader in the implementation of digital solutions.

The development of patient services provides patients with more control over their medical information. Thanks to specialized applications, patients can schedule doctor visits, view test results, and even manage their data directly. It is expected that by 2025, a Personal Account of the Patient with access to personal data at the eHealth central database level will be available.

The use of open data for management decision-making is also important. The National Health Service of Ukraine introduces analytical panels that help identify trends in healthcare and optimize the work of institutions. Open data promotes transparency and improves the efficiency of public fund utilization.

Artificial intelligence finds application in the medical field, speeding up diagnostics and easing routine tasks. Telemedicine is becoming an important part of medical services, providing access to consultations even in the most remote regions.

The growing demand for digital education among medical professionals indicates the need to improve workers’ skills in the conditions of rapid digitalization. Various training programs and initiatives help tackle these challenges by increasing the competency of domestic medical professionals.
