China ignores US calls to limit imports of Russian oil and gas
Beijing continues to enhance its energy cooperation with Moscow, ignoring the demands of US President Donald Trump to cease purchases of Russian oil and gas. This became evident after the arrival of the first batch of liquefied Russian gas in China since the imposition of US sanctions.
Bloomberg reports that the vessel Valera, which loaded a batch from the Portovaya facility of PJSC “Gazprom” in October, arrived at the Beihai import terminal in southern China. This transaction step demonstrates the strengthening of energy ties between China and Russia, despite US sanctions imposed earlier this year.
China’s actions may complicate trade negotiations between Washington and New Delhi, scheduled for this week, as the US has previously called to limit energy cooperation with Moscow. Among Russia’s major export plants in the Baltic Sea are Portovaya, managed by “Gazprom”, and the plant in Vysotsk, operated by PJSC “Novatek”. Both facilities are under sanctions.
Previously, China began actively using a “shadow fleet” to import Russian gas, buying it at a significant discount. In October, satellite images captured the transfer of fuel from one vessel to another, registered to a Chinese company. It is worth noting that China is entering into agreements with a 40% discount, supporting the growth of their economic cooperation with Russia.
