Axios on Zelensky’s new conversation: Russia still wants Donbas, United States is trying to address it

Zelensky and Kushner discuss further steps for peaceful resolution

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, took part in telephone negotiations with US representatives and other political figures to discuss the issues of territories and security guarantees for Ukraine.

On December 6, during a two-hour conversation between Ukrainian and American representatives, including the US President’s special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, the main focus was on territorial issues and security guarantees. The talks also included the Chief of the General Staff of the AFU, Andriy Hnatov, and the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, Rustem Umerov. The conversation, as reported by Axios, was the culmination of three days of intensive negotiations between high-ranking officials in Miami regarding the peace plan proposed by Donald Trump.

This dialogue took place shortly after the five-hour meeting between Witkoff and Kushner with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on December 2. According to sources, American representatives tried to pressure both sides to reach an agreement, particularly regarding the partial withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from Donbas. Additionally, security guarantees that the US intends to provide to Ukraine were actively discussed.

American and Ukrainian officials have come closer to reaching an agreement, but further negotiations are still necessary to coordinate and synchronize the interpretation of new guarantees by both sides. Ukrainian representatives emphasize the importance of realistic and fair decisions.

Diplomatic efforts will continue. Umerov and Hnatov will return to Europe to discuss the results of the negotiations with Zelensky in London on December 8. It is expected that negotiations with Witkoff and Kushner will resume in the following week.

French President Emmanuel Macron announced a meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky and the leaders of the United Kingdom and Germany on December 8 to assess the situation and US mediation efforts.
