Ukrainian delegation discussed peace initiatives with the US special envoy
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky and representatives of the Ukrainian delegation held a phone conversation with American partners regarding the end of the war with Russia.
In the phone call with the American side, represented by US President’s special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, son-in-law of Donald Trump, from the Ukrainian side, the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Andriy Hnatov and the head of the Ukrainian delegation, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Rustem Umerov, participated. Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized that the conversation was “long, substantive, and constructive.” The main topics were guarantees for ending the war and preventing a repeat Russian invasion.
Zelensky noted that Ukraine continues to seek honest cooperation with the US to achieve peace. According to him, the parties agreed on the next steps and formats for negotiations with Washington. The President expressed gratitude to Donald Trump for the intensive approach to negotiations.
It is anticipated that Zelensky, General Hnatov, and Rustem Umerov will continue to work on ideas for peaceful resolution. It is expected that the details of the peace plan will be clarified, although its full content is not disclosed at this time.
Amid events, French President Emmanuel Macron announced a joint meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky, as well as the Prime Ministers of the United Kingdom and Germany, to assess the current situation and US mediation efforts.
According to information from the Ukrainian delegation, during the initial negotiations in Geneva, the reduction of the Armed Forces and the issue of amnesty for both Russia and Ukraine were not discussed, as it was excluded from the negotiation agenda.
