Germany has approved a bill to counter drone threats
The German Chancellor’s cabinet has approved a bill allowing the military to use weapons against drones in cases where it is the only way to prevent danger.
According to ZDF heute, the new law grants the German army the authority to intercept and shoot down unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that frequently appear over military facilities and airports. German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt noted that permission to use weapons against drones will be granted only when other means of preventing danger are unavailable.
The police and regional authorities have gained the ability to quickly involve the military in combating drones. Additionally, there are plans to establish a national drone protection center to coordinate the actions of various agencies. “We are significantly enhancing our capabilities to counter drones to be as prepared as possible,” Dobrindt emphasized.
At the same time, he refuted critical remarks regarding possible violations of constitutional restrictions on the use of the army. In December, the minister plans to hold consultations with representatives of the 16 federal states to clarify decision-making processes and other details. This decision follows previous discussions highlighting the challenges of deploying the army due to historical constraints.
