The US proposes trilateral talks involving Ukraine and Russia
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky awaits the results of the initial talks with the United States, after which it will be possible to discuss a trilateral meeting with Russia.
The United States proposed to hold talks between the delegations of Ukraine, Russia, and Europe, Volodymyr Zelensky said at a briefing with Prime Minister of Portugal Luís Montenegro. The President noted that the details of the talks with the American side will become known to him after the delegation’s report. On the meeting of December 19, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Rustem Umerov discussed the proposals with US representatives.
Zelensky emphasized the importance of European partners’ participation in the talks as a logical step following the US-Ukraine meeting. He awaits the delegation’s report to assess the prospects of continuing the dialogue. The President also mentioned previous talks with Russians in Turkey, which led to prisoner exchanges and the return of civilians.
The United States insists on a trilateral meeting with Ukraine and Russia, which could potentially lead to unlocking exchanges or agreeing on negotiations at the leader level. Should these prospects arise, Ukraine will support this proposal. On December 20, it became known that a special representative of the Russian president is heading to the US to participate in a meeting with American officials.
