Ukrainian parliament will ensure open access to broadcasts of its sessions
President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a law providing for public access to the broadcasts of the Verkhovna Rada committee meetings, which are available online and will be stored indefinitely.
On December 17, Volodymyr Zelensky signed law No. 4212-IX, adopted by the Verkhovna Rada at the beginning of this year, which provides public access to the broadcasts of parliamentary committee meetings. To ensure transparency, committees will broadcast their sessions on the Verkhovna Rada website. Video recordings of these broadcasts will be available no later than 24 hours after the meeting’s conclusion and will remain in the public domain indefinitely.
The new law also gives journalists the right to participate in government events held in video conference format. The law comes into force the day after publication and will take effect in a month. Previously, parliamentary committees held meetings behind closed doors, limiting public access to these processes. This bill is an important step toward increasing the transparency of the parliament’s work and ensuring citizens’ rights to access information.
Experts believe that these changes can significantly improve communication between the government and society, as well as promote greater accountability of MPs regarding their decisions.
