We, the Czechs, know well what it is: Pavel warned against a new Munich Agreement.

The President of the Czech Republic calls for full involvement of Ukraine in the negotiation process

The President of the Czech Republic, Petr Pavel, emphasizes that Ukraine must be a full participant in any negotiations regarding the resolution of the war with Russia, warning about the danger of repeating the historical Munich Agreement of 1938.

In an interview with the Polish channel TVN24+, recorded before the start of negotiations in Geneva, Petr Pavel stated that excluding Ukraine from the negotiations could draw historical parallels with the well-known Munich Agreement. The President of the Czech Republic stressed that such decisions cannot be made without Ukraine’s involvement, as it directly concerns their territory, people, and lives. He warned against concessions that could lead to the appeasement of an aggressor, as happened in 1938. Pavel firmly rejected Russia’s initial demands, including restrictions on Ukraine joining NATO. At the same time, he believes that in the current conditions on the front, ceding certain territories might be a realistic, though painful, step.

The President emphasized that the West should strive to restore agreements and arms control with Russia. Pavel stressed the need to develop mechanisms to avoid military conflicts in the future.

Historical context Current statements
The Munich Agreement of 1938 was signed without Czechoslovakia’s participation and led to the loss of part of its territory. Petr Pavel insists on Ukraine’s involvement in all negotiations to avoid repeating similar situations.

The Munich Agreement became a notorious example of appeasement policy, which had catastrophic consequences for Europe. Additionally, in the modern context, the decisive role of Ukraine’s participation in the negotiation process can have very important political and diplomatic consequences, which will determine the future security of the region.
