Ukrainian nuclear power plants reduced their capacity due to Russia’s attack.

Reduction of Reactor Power at Nuclear Power Plants in Ukraine Due to Russian Attacks

After the recent Russian attacks, Ukraine’s energy facilities suffered significant losses: four out of nine reactors reduced their power, thus weakening the energy system.

According to the report of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Ukraine-controlled nuclear power plants were forced to reduce electricity production on November 19. This was due to shelling affecting energy facilities near the stations. In particular, the Khmelnytsky and Rivne nuclear power plants lost connection to one of the high-voltage power lines, which forced them to reduce their generation capacity. These actions added to previous reductions in production due to military threats.

The South Ukrainian NPP also suffered losses, losing connection with a high-voltage line and reporting the detection of 11 drones at a distance of one kilometer from the summer facility. The station’s management and IAEA teams working at these sites were forced to seek shelter during the morning air raid alert.

Overall, Russian attacks on the night of November 19 were accompanied by the launch of 48 missiles and 476 drones, the majority of which were destroyed by the Ukrainian air defense forces. The most significant destruction occurred in Ternopil, where two high-rise buildings were destroyed, resulting in 26 fatalities and over 90 injuries. In connection with the tragedy, days of mourning were declared in Ternopil from November 19 to 21.
