Ukraine can support an army of 500,000 after the war
After the end of the war with Russia, Ukraine will be able to maintain an army of up to 500,000 people with the help of international partners. This opinion was expressed by Valentyn Badrak, an analyst and director of the Center for Army, Conversion and Disarmament Studies, in his article for LIGA.net.
According to Badrak, the proposed composition of the Ukrainian army includes 300,000 – 350,000 professional servicemen who will serve on a contractual basis for terms ranging from three to 25 years. The remaining positions can be filled by conscripts or contract soldiers with terms up to three years. An important part of the defense will be the development of the Territorial Defense Forces, which will allow maintaining a mobilization reserve of up to 1.5 million people. This implies the formation of a cadre of officers and sergeants who will provide basic training and coordination of units.
On December 11, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, announced that in the current version of the military reform plan, the number of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is 800,000 people, which corresponds to the current numerical composition of the army.
| Category of Servicemen | Number |
| Professional Military | 300,000 – 350,000 |
| Contract and Conscription Soldiers | up to 150,000 |
| Mobilization Reserve | up to 1.5 million |
