Ukraine increased electricity exports in May.

Ukraine significantly increased its electricity exports in May, which rose by 2.8 times compared to April, reaching 94,000 MWh, according to ExPro Electricity data. Despite this, the country remains a net importer of electricity.

The growth in exports was mainly towards Romania, where supply volumes increased more than fivefold, to 16,200 MWh. The largest volume of exports was directed through the Hungarian route, which accounted for 64% of all external electricity supplies in May.

Overall, since the beginning of 2023, Ukraine exported 157,500 MWh of electricity. Compared to the same period of the previous year, export volumes have remained almost unchanged. Meanwhile, electricity import volumes in May decreased by 29% compared to April, to 398,000 MWh; the reduction was noted for all directions except Slovakia. The main share of imports also fell on Hungary, which provided 52% of the total import volume.

Even under conditions of growing exports, Ukraine continues to be a net importer of electricity, as import volumes exceeded exports by more than four times. This is due, in particular, to the need to ensure the stability of energy supply and the ongoing maintenance work at power units.

Direction Export in May (MWh) Import in May (MWh)
Hungary 60.1 thousand 207.0 thousand
Romania 16.2 thousand
Total volume 94.0 thousand 398.0 thousand
