The EU Supports Ukraine’s Energy Resilience: Naftogaz Receives a Grant of 127 Million Euros
Ukraine is strengthening its energy resilience due to an agreement between Naftogaz and the European Investment Bank for 127 million euros. The agreement is funded by the European Union with the support of Norway.
The European Investment Platform for Ukraine (Ukraine Investment Framework, UIF) has become a key mechanism for mobilizing investments in Ukraine’s recovery and reconstruction. For the first time, Norway directed its assistance through this platform, highlighting the importance of international cooperation. The 127 million euro grant complements an already provided loan from the EIB of 300 million euros, demonstrating the urgency of action amid Russian aggression.
EIB Vice-President Teresa Czerwińska stressed the importance of the “Team Europe” collaboration to ensure the uninterrupted operation of critical energy services in Ukraine. The situation arising from Russian attacks on gas infrastructure has forced Ukraine to turn to international partners to overcome the energy crisis. The government has already announced the necessity to increase gas imports by 30%.
Previously, it was reported that Ukraine lost up to 60% of its gas production due to Russian strikes, and President Volodymyr Zelensky estimated the gas needs at about 2 billion dollars. In this context, several countries agreed to provide grants to supply the country with gas, which is a significant step in enhancing Ukraine’s energy security.
