The Paris prosecutor’s office has charged two people in connection with the Louvre theft case. Among the detainees is a woman who expressed fear for her children during the court hearing.
On November 1, the Paris prosecutor’s office filed charges in a high-profile Louvre theft case that took place on October 19. According to Bloomberg, two of the five detainees have been charged with organized theft and criminal conspiracy. One of the accused is a 37-year-old man with a criminal past, who will remain in custody until the court hearing. The second suspect turned out to be a 38-year-old woman detained in connection with complicity. She also remains in custody, although both deny their involvement in the crime.
A total of five people were detained in the case. The other three were released after being arrested on October 29, prosecutor Laura Becco reported. Meanwhile, two men previously arrested on October 26 have also been charged. According to RTI, they partially admitted their involvement.
Among the items stolen from the Louvre were precious necklaces, tiaras, and earrings valued at 88 million euros. The jewelry remains unfound to date, and part of the collection was moved for storage to the underground vault of the Bank of France following the theft. The French Ministry of Culture clarified that none of these jewels were insured.
The case has attracted significant public and media attention, as the Louvre is one of the world’s most famous museums. The further course of the investigation may serve as an example for strengthening the security system of similar institutions and may prompt the international community to reconsider approaches to insuring art valuables.
