Trump Calls for Elections in Ukraine Amid Rising Tensions
US President Donald Trump believes it is time for the long-awaited elections to be held in Ukraine and foresees a possible victory for the current head of state, Volodymyr Zelensky. He made this statement in an interview with Politico.
Trump responded affirmatively to a journalist’s question about the necessity of holding elections in Ukraine. According to the US president, a prolonged period without elections indicates a lack of democracy, and it is important to ensure the citizens’ right to hold them. He added that Zelensky might win again, but emphasized that elections are necessary to ensure democracy.
Let us recall that on February 18, 2025, after negotiations between representatives of the US and Russia in Saudi Arabia, Trump assessed Zelensky’s support rating at 4% and expressed a desire to see elections in Ukraine. However, on February 19, KIIS released poll data showing that 57% of Ukrainians trust Zelensky.
On the same day, Trump called Zelensky a “dictator without elections” and stated that the president of Ukraine should “move fast, or there might be no country left.” Meanwhile, Ukrainian diplomat Pavlo Klimkin urged skepticism about Trump’s words, pointing to the lack of confirmation for his assessments.
