Former Energoatom Security Director Released from Detention on Bail
Igor Fursenko, the former security director of the state enterprise “Energoatom,” was released from custody after posting bail of 95 million hryvnias as part of the anti-corruption operation “Midas.”
According to data published by the “Schemes” project of Radio Liberty media, bail for Fursenko was posted on November 24, and the next day he was released. The suspect’s defense attorney, Petro Boyko, confirmed this information, but it was not possible to reach Fursenko for comments.
The Fursenko case is related to accusations of organizing an illegal “back office” for money laundering. During the investigation, it was revealed that he appeared on surveillance recordings under the pseudonym “Reshik.” Among other things, the tapes recorded his complaints about the difficulty of transferring large sums of cash.
The financial support for the bail was provided by the private company “Varus Synergy,” owned by Bohdan Furkevych. Journalists noted that this company is officially registered in Kyiv and is engaged in wholesale timber trade. However, it was also not possible to obtain comments from the owner of the firm on this matter.
Operation “Midas,” during which Fursenko was detained, is part of a broader investigation by Ukraine’s anti-corruption bodies. It covers several key state officials suspected of involvement in corruption schemes. One such example is the recent arrests and bails for other suspects with similar charges.
Despite the keen interest in the case from the public and journalists, it underscores the need for further development of anti-corruption infrastructure in Ukraine, which is an important step towards improving state governance and the international image of the country.
