The EU extended economic sanctions against Russia by one year.

The EU extended economic sanctions against Russia until July 2027 for actions destabilizing the situation in Ukraine, maintaining restrictions on key sectors of the economy.

The Council of the European Union officially decided to extend economic sanctions against Russia for another year, until July 31, 2027. This was announced after a European Council meeting, where EU leaders agreed to maintain restrictive measures. The sanctions, first imposed in 2014, have been significantly expanded since February 2022 in response to Russian aggression against Ukraine.

The current measures cover major sectors, including trade, finance, energy, and dual-use technology. In particular, the ban applies to the import of maritime crude oil and certain petroleum products from Russia to the EU. Restrictions are imposed on financial transactions as well as the activities of crypto traders. Moreover, the sanctions include the suspension of broadcasting of certain Russian disinformation channels in the European Union.

The European Union reserves the right to introduce additional measures if Russia continues its illegal actions. This is the first time the EU has agreed to extend sanctions for 12 months, indicating readiness for long-term counteraction to threats to regional stability. The European Commission is also considering the introduction of a new package of sanctions; however, its implementation faces opposition from certain member states, particularly Bulgaria.
