The EU and Belgium failed to reach an agreement on Russian assets – media

The working meeting between the European Commission and Belgium did not bring a breakthrough on frozen Russian assets

A recent meeting between the representatives of the European Commission and Belgium did not allow for significant progress on the transfer of frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine. The lack of alternative proposals is causing concern in Brussels.

The European Commission and Belgian officials gathered to discuss the important issue of using frozen Russian reserves, but no significant advancement was achieved. According to Euronews, it is important for Belgium to thoroughly examine all possibilities to ensure an optimal solution for this complex issue.

The Belgian side, while not expressing disappointment, emphasizes that time is running out, so it is important to remain constructive. The European Union, in turn, remains hopeful of reaching an agreement with Belgium but recognizes that little time is left.

Currently, the European Commission’s plan to provide Ukraine with a “reparation loan” of 140 billion euros has faced resistance from Belgium. It was envisaged that this sum would be formed from Russian assets frozen after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

A key meeting between the leaders of the European Commission and the Belgian government is scheduled for November 7, where the discussion of Belgian demands and attempts to resolve existing contradictions are expected.
