Syrskyi: Ukraine does not fight for ruins; the lives of our soldiers are our highest priority.

Commander-in-Chief of Ukraine: Conditions for peace must be just

Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrsky, stated that a just peace is important for Ukraine, not conditions imposed from outside. He emphasized that the lives of servicemen are the highest value for the country.

In an interview with the German TV channel ZDF, the commander-in-chief emphasized Ukraine’s desire to preserve the lives of its soldiers. “We do not fight for ruins, we value every citizen and serviceman,” Syrsky noted. He also emphasized that in case the defense loses its purpose, Ukrainian forces retreat to preserve the lives of their defenders.

Syrsky drew attention to the fact that Russia has become an aggressor by attacking Ukraine and occupying its territories, and they bear responsibility for the destruction of a significant part of the country. “Peace must be just,” he said, noting that Ukraine will never accept peace conditions that are imposed through military force.

The context of these statements is the prolonged Russian aggression against Ukraine, starting in 2014 when Crimea and part of Donbas were occupied. Syrsky’s statements emphasize the strategic approach of the Ukrainian command, which seeks to avoid unnecessary losses among the military, even if it means a tactical retreat.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky also emphasized the importance of protecting the country’s eastern regions, stressing that no one should sacrifice their lives for ruins. Despite reported heavy losses among the occupying forces, the enemy’s advance remains limited.
